As we know from the past, turning them over to Church-run institutes proved to be a disaster, a crime of mammoth proportions; largely because the carers were judgmental and haughty, looking on those who needed help as sinners and losers. I’d read ca,e blurb and the first chapter so I had an idea in my mind of where the book was going but Overington turned it right on its head and it turns out that the first chapter is actually somewhat towards the later part of the story.

It brought to life ovrrington love that Med had for his children and grandchildren, emphasising the human condition of imperfection and making mistakes.

It is a clever device used to push the story along while imbuing the narrative with an authentic flavour of what it would be like for an older person of modest intellect and education, go very little experience of the wide world, having to deal with the complexities of 21st century legal issues.

A young woman pushed through the hospital doors. Admission to hospital and further tests disclose the 14 week old infant has severe swelling of the brain, probably the result of Shaken Baby Syndrome. Is ignorance an excuse? I have to admit, I have a real soft spot for novels that are set in a well-known place, especially when that place evokes good memories.

The fate of overingto people, living close to the line, keeps you wondering what will happen next; what disaster will these people bring on hoodbye, and what new political correct action will the social workers inflict on them?
