I was unable to like or even mildly stand any of the characters. In regards to the book — I had come to see that there was a shedding of skin necessary to fully engage in a marriage and especially in preparing to be a parent — and that skin coming off can feel an awful lot like a death. Somehow my brain put that image in place and it kept chiming with every chapter. The basketball challenge between Jimmy and the year-old, who cries when he loses his brother’s money.
